I thought this was fantastic, particularly the duplication stuff... until the flurry of special effects shots at the end, which kinda looked like the "before" images in the Video CoPilot tutorials. Still though, phenomenally impressed with the vibe and passion of this team. they will make it happen, one way or another

Leta P. Posted 7 months ago
I like your fun fact pictures!
Tim T. Posted 7 months ago
Love the ambition guys. Guess for sort of constructive criticism...I'd be curious how much of your feature would need compositing and effects, dealing with that amount in a reasonable timeframe, and if it'll hold up when projected in a theater.
Best of luck!
Akash S. Posted 7 months ago
Hi Tim! VFX are definitely an important part to how we can create our proposed setting for the feature. There are certain ways where we can cleverly get away with minimalist VFX and construct our desired setting. You saw a small example in this video, though for the feature it will be way more extensive and well-thought out. This just kind of showed that we have the right mind sets to find these short cuts.
Uprising is a huge story that takes place in a huge setting, but we focus on the huge story part first; it just happens to take place in the future. I guess our biggest "Cheap Trick", is to limit the amount of VFX (though it has to be present at times) and focus more on character interaction and plot which is exactly how our script is looking right now.
As you can see I myself did the visuals for the concept trailer, I would prefer to hire a small team to do that because my ability is limited. However, I think with enough time and resources I could pull a "Gareth Edwards" and do all the VFX myself haha
Thanks for the comment! If you have any more feedback don't be a afraid to let us know! :)
Michael L. Posted 7 months ago
If VFX is what you guys came up in your concept trailer, I can imagine what the final effects work look like if you guys win the big prize. The visual effects and compositing is pretty impressive for your concept trailer.
Akash S. Posted 7 months ago
Thanks so much Michael! We hope to improve greatly on our visual effects for the feature, so if you if you liked out trailer just wait for the real deal!
Danny L. Posted 7 months ago

VFX have been the saving grace allowing low budget films seem so much bigger. Good work planning ahead to save money during post.
Todd M. Posted 7 months ago
Nice use of compositing to save costume budget. Down the road costumes might prove cheaper than post production on some projects. But looks to me like you guys would think of that. Good for you. Nice job.
Glenna S. Posted 7 months ago

That's so kind Rita! We're honoured to be to be apart of cinecoup
Imthiyaz H. Posted 7 months ago
Interesting ideas, certainly around the VFX, do you think something with a scope like Uprising really should have a small budget?
Akash S. Posted 7 months ago
Good question Imthiyaz, there have been many films about dystopian societies with revolutions, all with fairly big budgets. What Uprising is intending to do, aside from having a very intense and meaty plot, is to tackle a concept this big, though do it in a much different way than the classic hollywood formula. For instance, the story revolves around a group of young revolutionaries and we see the film through solely their eyes, unlike where in some films you see the dictatorial figurehead plotting in the background. This way the audience can get much more personal with the main characters and be with them 100% of the way...no to mention this cut the budget hugely so we don't actually have to build the interior of that metropolis in the distance haha.

Emily H. Posted 7 months ago
You guys are extremely talented and definitely show what Indy filmmaking is all about, resourcefulness!
Rob H. Posted 7 months ago
great, you got effects, but effects don't necessarily mean good storytelling, don't forget to focus on the plot and character development!
Akash S. Posted 7 months ago
Definitely :) This is was to demonstrate that we have the right mindsets to work within a budget, but actually one of our biggest money savers is focusing much more on plot and character development rather than having a special effects extravaganza! The effects are just their to compliment our ability to create the environment!
Rob H. Posted 7 months ago
awesome, even if this thing doesn't work out in your favour, i am quite confident you will be able to pull off, good work and good luck!
Eric T. Posted 7 months ago
I knew you guys made the costumes yourselves but I didn't know you only made one! Excellent work.

You've done a really good job at explaining what you're capable of doing with very little money. Good use of resources and very professionally edited and put together. Keep up the great work.

Thanks Rachel! Hopefully we can just keep on learning more :)
Josh P. Posted 7 months ago
Nice job!! Way to be resourceful.
Afzal H. Posted 7 months ago
Mad skills! And great use of resources. Really looking forward to seeing this come to life. Please make sure you do a behind the scenes while in production, it'll be very helpful for filmmakers interested in this approach.
Kirk S. Posted 7 months ago
Some really good ideas.
Joseph L. Posted 7 months ago
Ok, as ridiculously idolizing as this sounds, as a dude with an interest in vfx your visual effects are absolutely inspirational. You have a beautiful sense of light and colour, and your attention to detail really impresses me. To be totally honest though, I found the explosions a bit too artificial, which yanked me out of it. I think it was exacerbated by snowy environment. There are limits to what's possible, but a sense of the explosion reflecting on the snow might have helped.
Akash S. Posted 7 months ago
Thanks for the feedback Joseph! You have a really good eye for detail as well haha. Reflection on the snow is going to be must, thanks so much for point it out!
Jennifer C. Posted 7 months ago
Interesting ideas. Good job.

Grace M. Posted 7 months ago
looks so professional, well done team!
Todd M. Posted 7 months ago
Nice work on the "cloning" the costume. But with actually paying a VFX department their rates to clone and matte paint all the background, the scope of this seems way past the budget constraints... Will your VFX people be working for free?
Akash S. Posted 7 months ago
Hi Todd! We've drawn a lot of inspiration from the case study of Monsters (2010) where it had a lot of VFX to construct the setting but cost next to nothing because Gareth Edwards did it himself! Now if we aren't fully up to the challenge to do that, or if we aren't fully confident in our ability, we have done some research on VFX rates and they aren't as high as you might think, so its definitely doable on a budget under 1 million. So it is all possible, where there is a will there's a way my friend!
Thanks for your concern Todd, its always good to question and then evaluate!
Lindsay F. Posted 7 months ago
I know nothing about visual effects, so I love that you explained how you achieved a lot of what you did with this trailer.
Tyler M. Posted 7 months ago
good video guys, we took a different approach, we're focusing more on practical production value. I am definately beginning to see some parallels between our projects :) Transmission
Akash S. Posted 7 months ago
Right on Tyler! Transmission is looking good!
Tyler M. Posted 7 months ago
Thanks Akash, Uprising is looking great, imagine what we could come up with together!
Jeremy B. Posted 7 months ago
Slick presentation of your tricks, guys. Keep it up!
John K. Posted 7 months ago
This is an amazingly ambitious project for $1,000,000. I like the idea and your trailer and I do think you have many tricks at your disposal to cut costs, but there's just so much you can do. I wish you luck in your endeavors.
Chris C. Posted 7 months ago
As a 30 minute short I think you guys could do wonders with a million dollars, but the scale of your project seems way to large.
The smaller shots where you were capable of duplicating a few characters look good, but the wider shots featuring any sort of added background stand out a lot (and so does that explosion). To make shots like those work, along with adding any required CG, is going to require a professional level of help. Help which is going to cost a great deal of money.
What you have shown us already has been done well, but does not have that Hollywood level of quality. If it did, I would say you guys have a shot, but for now your project is far too ambitious.
I just saw the trailer for The Colony which had a budget of 16 MILLION, and was a much smaller scale than your movie, and the effects looked very poor. How could you do better with a film with a larger scale and a fraction of the money?
Akash S. Posted 7 months ago
Thanks for the feedback Chris! Keep in mind that again we really next to no budget for this, and should we have a budget the first thing we'd do is make sure we have good equipment to film with. We did our best to achieve a film look with an SLR camera haha.
Also again, its our job as filmmakers to find a way to bring a concept this big to the screen while staying within budgetary constraints. Uprising isn't a special fx extravaganza, its a story that will use special fx to compliment its ability to construct a setting around that story.
It's very easy to have a level of doubt when it comes to us being so young and our project being so big, but the challenge is to be brave and believe that it can be done. We are aware we are not trained fx artists, or writers, or directors, however we are experienced in pushing ourselves to a higher level with each new project.
To answer your last question, perhaps the The Colony isn't the best comparison. Check out the movie Monsters, it's probably the best case study one can use in relation to our project. It was made for under 1 million, and the effects were very well used and helped create a much bigger scale picture than expected!
Thanks for useful feedback, we'll always need some!

Derick M. Posted 7 months ago
exactly the kind of effects compositing i want to be doing... love AE, and just started messing with element 3d. one suggestion, the shot with 3 troops and kneeling guy felt too bright for what was happening. also i noticed you used a warm color correction despite the scenes being cold both in imagery and in physical appearance.too much red/orange to the highlights, made it feel odd
Akash S. Posted 7 months ago
Love your eye for detail Derick! We messed around with some cooler tones, however we wanted to experiment with a new look. thanks for your feedback, we will definitely keep it in mind if we make the full length film!
Derick M. Posted 7 months ago
Haha, you should keep me in mind :p only a province away in sk. Would love to help if it goes somewhere.
