Perfect the way silence actually conveys so much first about what the kid and then the mom are going through.
Jordan S. Posted 5 months ago
I love it, kind of a kinky storyline but its very entertaining. I love these indie horror films because they are always super creative.
Perry M. Posted 6 months ago
very interesting to watch. Whenever there is confusion, fear, suspense and running away from something or being chased..then coming up to a house..well done!
ronald s. Posted 6 months ago
This mission feels like a huge breakthrough for Starkers. I expected to see more of girl tied up, but instead you connected with me here. Nice.
Lily K. Posted 6 months ago
This is one of the more emotionally charged of the Speechless missions. I didn't expect that form this team at all. Wow.
Luke S. Posted 6 months ago
Thanks Lily! We knew we had it in us, but this one gave us a great angle to focus on the emotional core of the movie that we hadn't hit on before. The fact that it's wordless is just that much more interesting. cheers!
Christy M. Posted 6 months ago
Gorgeous scenery! Really liked your mission video. Captured my attention throughout. I look forward to seeing more!
Cathy J. Posted 6 months ago
Excellent job! I love how you squeezed in so many elements of the story here... well done. I really feel for her and the struggle to communicate with her mother. It's also very scary and disturbing!
Luke S. Posted 6 months ago
Thanks Cathy! It was a challenge but we felt it was important to give play to both key sides of the Starkers story. It's great to know we pulled it off!
Lene M. Posted 6 months ago
Great concept very well done! So sad then creepy
Luke S. Posted 6 months ago
Thanks Lene! That's the arc we wanted to travel - glad it connected!
John M. Posted 6 months ago
I understand wanting to show her past catching up with her, but why does she have to turn it on at this moment? - a little too strange for me.
Luke S. Posted 6 months ago
Thanks for the comment John. Truthfully, in the actual film we'd set this up more, but in the context of a 90-second video there simply was no time to add the extra seconds that would be Kate's exasperation as she goes to lie down, turning the TV on, having a drink as she flips through the guide, and discovering one of her own films there, then turning it on out of misguided curiosity. Which I'm pretty sure is how it plays in the script. We just had to make a leap there, for the sake of narrative economy. Hope that clarifies a little!
Robert T. Posted 6 months ago
Really awesome job on this mission. I think the story is fascinating. And I also really loved the music!
Luke S. Posted 6 months ago
Thanks Robert! This short sequence turned out to be a great window into the Starkers story. And the music's a combo of composer Marc Koecher's score and some nifty finds on JinglePunks. Really helped to make it even more expressive!
Alejandro P. Posted 6 months ago
Great concept I like how the idea is transmitted on the video, the actors where great and could understand the concept from the beginning, the angles helped me a lot to get immersed into the plot, and get to understand the feeling that is supposed to be in every moment. Great job!
Luke S. Posted 6 months ago
cheers Alejandro! it's gratifying for us for sure when each moment connects with our viewers.
Jeff M. Posted 6 months ago
Speechless mission has left me speechless!! Excited to see how this film works out. Good luck Team! Go Starkers
Luke S. Posted 6 months ago
Thanks Jeff! Trust me - this is just the tip of the iceberg! :D
Riley T. Posted 6 months ago
I really enjoyed watching this video. It tells a story within the short span of time and does it without using words! Awesome.
Luke S. Posted 6 months ago
Thanks Riley!
Kevin C. Posted 6 months ago
This is really effective. The strain in the mom-daughter comes through loud & clear, and then yikes creepy cut!
Luke S. Posted 6 months ago
cheers! It was hard for us get all the elements of our story into one sequence, but I think we managed to pull it off with this puppy!
Rhonda B. Posted 6 months ago
hhhmmm. I think I understand your premise? The mom is trying to make a better life for her child? Not bad
Jolene K. Posted 6 months ago
good job
Jean Marc S. Posted 6 months ago
Great flow, I like how this trailer, is building the climax, and suspense, camera shots and locations!
Jolene K. Posted 6 months ago
yep
manon c. Posted 6 months ago
Yes Damien this is creepy I agree re the porn movie with a kid there. What is the point of that? What does it mean? I am on the fence right now
Luke S. Posted 6 months ago
Fair enough. thanks for the comment Manon. You have to dig a bit deeper into our story to understand all of what's happening. Kate's left behind her career in porn to pick up the pieces with the daughter she gave up for adoption years before, when the girl has just been orphaned. This being a thriller, other forces will intervene...
Damien N. Posted 6 months ago
The ending was super creepy! Also, the fact that she is watching a porno video of herself as her daughter sleeps. Very disturbing, but in a nice way.
Luke S. Posted 6 months ago
Thanks Damien!
Peyton L. Posted 6 months ago
Interesting relationship between the child and the mother. Would like to see more of this. Good luck with the remaining missions.
Luke S. Posted 6 months ago
We're trying to do something unusual, involving and challenging, all in a nice slasher-thriller wrapper...! Glad it's got your interest!
Ben S. Posted 6 months ago
Great looking shoots, really good emotions, shown by the actors! You guys are one of my favorites! Go Toronto
Luke S. Posted 6 months ago
cheers Ben! appreciate the support!
Alex M. Posted 6 months ago
Seems like you guys really enjoy your time producing this. I don't even care whether or not it wins, I feel like it'll be top-notch due to your commitments.
Luke S. Posted 6 months ago
Thanks Alex! We're definitely gonna run with Starkers, no matter the outcome. We've found a pretty interesting idea here, and we've got to bring it to the screen.
Brian C. Posted 6 months ago
You really feel the pain this young girl is going through and the struggle to communicate for her mother. And then BAM! Scary!
Luke S. Posted 6 months ago
Exactly! Thanks Brian! totally what we're going for.
Jonah G. Posted 6 months ago
From the behind the scenes pic it looks like you all had fun doing this, which is quite a contrast to the scene where nobody is happy. Great acting!
Luke S. Posted 6 months ago
Our cast is quite awesome. They can turn it on when they need to. Especially considering the unbelievably long day we subjected them to. These guys are troopers!
Ari M. Posted 6 months ago
Love everything aout how this was shot and assembled. The low level lighting and the highlights, the camerawork. All around really amazing work.
Luke S. Posted 6 months ago
Thanks Ari! We're pretty proud of how this one came off. And kudos to Brent Robinson, who joined us for this outing as cinematographer. He definitely had an impact.
Dean S. Posted 6 months ago
This is a really nice setup scene for things to come. We see the relationship is troubled and that there is a bad guy looming. I'm in!
Luke S. Posted 6 months ago
The pieces are on the board. You don't know what's going to happen exactly, but you know the feeling. We relish your dread!
Curtis T. Posted 6 months ago
This one did a good job of showing some emotion between the two characters... but I didn't really get a sense of much other than angry teen and caring mom. Which is fine..if that's all it was supposed to be...
Luke S. Posted 6 months ago
Thanks Curtis! Well there's definitely some who haven't seen Kate as a caring mom at all, watching porn beside her sleeping daughter. I hope the answer's somewhere inbetween. Kate aspires to care, but falls short too often, because she just doesn't know how. All depends how you read it...
Ryan C. Posted 6 months ago
This one definitely sells me more on Starkers. It's good to see you care about your characters like this. And you still bring the horror too.
Luke S. Posted 6 months ago
Thanks Ryan! We definitely do care. Where a lot of horror movies fall down these days is you meet a bunch of characters, they do some dumb things and then they die. Our intention is to be more deliberate, to give you time to sink into this world and get to know these people. Eventually, as it must, all hell will break loose!
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
Oh we WILL bring the horror, but you knew that. We wanted to surprise people a bit with this. Glad you enjoyed it.
Zach H. Posted 6 months ago
Nice looking clip. I am still creeped out by your stalker character. It was a nice way to end the clip!
Luke S. Posted 6 months ago
And that's why he's there! ;) It was important for us to tie back into the thriller side of the movie, even just for a moment of fleeting chills...
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
Thanks Zach - it seemed important to show the two sides of our thriller.
Kevin L. Posted 6 months ago
I'm really feeling this video. I think it fleshes out your concept in terms of the story's emotional arc.
Luke S. Posted 6 months ago
Thanks Kevin! Doing this video was a real eye-opener for us. It helped us get at the heart of some of the emotional things we want to achieve, things that move Starkers away from a typical genre picture.
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
Thanks Kevin. We appreciate the comment. We wanted viewers to get a closer look at our characters' situation.
Melissa H. Posted 6 months ago
I'm curious about where this story is going, so good job on catching my interest! I loved the characters. I was invested in them in the short minute and a half!
Luke S. Posted 6 months ago
Thanks Melissa! Starkers is gonna be an interesting challenge to pull off, combining this mother-daughter character drama with the horror-thriller intrigue of a stalker movie. The latest script goes a long way to nailing it down. Glad you like this short, which really opened the door for us on how to approach the movie.
Michael I. Posted 6 months ago
I actually think this carried me along with it all the way emotionally. I sort of forgot that it was a horror movie - until the end. Nice!
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
We wanted to focus on a complete emotional mini arc for both characters. Glad we connected with you.
Luke S. Posted 6 months ago
Appreciate it Michael! It was a challenge to connect the dots between the two sides of our story in such a short space. And with no words! cool that it worked for you!
George D. Posted 6 months ago
This one looks great! Nice shots and well edited. The track through the wall shot at the end is a nice visual and creepy note to end on.
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
Thanks for the praise. Gotta keep it a bit creepy right?
Luke S. Posted 6 months ago
That tracking shot was totally improvised at 4am, when our original scripted plan just wouldn't work with the motel room we were in. Necessity does make for great invention!
Dug R. Posted 6 months ago
I'm a big fan of this project and I think this mission shows us why. You're focusing on the right things even in this small clip. Character, character, character.
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
Glad to have you as a fan. We love these characters too!
Oskar W. Posted 6 months ago
It's been a while since I watched this. I'm curious about how you plan to take this further. I'm going through all sorts of entries, start to finish. Keep it up. Congrats on the trending.
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
Thanks for your support Oskar. We have an amazing script that addresses themes started here and so much more!
Luke S. Posted 6 months ago
Themes within themes!
Luke S. Posted 6 months ago
Thanks Oskar! And good on ya for going through all the teams - there's a lot of really great work here. cheers!
Jeffrey C. Posted 6 months ago
Great looking shots, and nice job with all the little sound details. With the scene you chose, you seem to be telling us that your focus will be on character not gore. I'm in!
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
That was definitely the idea Jeff.
Luke S. Posted 6 months ago
Definitely. Which isn't to say there won't be some gore. But movies like The Exorcist, or even the brilliantly simple Halloween, work because they start in a believable world, with characters you actually get to know and care about. And then, shit goes sideways... :)
TeamJessie P. Posted 6 months ago
I love this story and am very much pulling for this film to be made; it is very well done and I wish you all the best!
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
Thanks - we're definitely fans of JP too, btw.
Siluck S. Posted 6 months ago
This was a nice showcase for your filmmaking and the actors. It looks great and the music really works too.
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
Thanks, glad you enjoyed everything Siluck.
Luke S. Posted 6 months ago
It was a good challenge for the actors too. They really rose to it. cheers!
Vincent B. Posted 6 months ago
I can't wait to see some more. I really like the way this was put together. The locations look great and the way you make use of them. Nice!
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
It was a challenge to juggle so many locations in a single shoot day with no resources, but I agree it was completely worthwhile.
mark m. Posted 6 months ago
So to guess what happens next... the stalker is obviously the guy who takes them captive. Not sure how he hooks up with Kate there though... waiting to find out!
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
Vote for us an maybe we'll get that movie made for you ;)
Luke S. Posted 6 months ago
Maybe yes, maybe no. There's a lot more to come. The only way to find out is to get it made!
Glen M. Posted 6 months ago
I really think this is a huge step up in terms of lighting. You've also given us a scene that is as compelling as the teaser, maybe even more.
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
We were thrilled to have a DOP onboard to help us make everything look so good!
Luke S. Posted 6 months ago
Thanks Glen! With this mission we really feel like we hit our stride. And we had some great help!
Jack W. Posted 6 months ago
I think you showed a good ability to put together a couple of scenes here in a coherent and emotionally packed sequence. Great job!
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
Thanks- we can't wait to start really playing with a bunch of scenes when we shoot the movie :)
Joslyn P. Posted 6 months ago
Music was good. Great opening nice work :)
Luke S. Posted 6 months ago
Thanks Joslyn! The music is a mix of our composer Marc Koecher and a great track we found on JinglePunks.com.
Andrew C. Posted 6 months ago
Good use of locations throughout this. I really felt Charlotte's pain and her mother's struggle to communicate.
Luke S. Posted 6 months ago
Thanks Andrew! The mission required us to be "silent", but it really helped us dig into this side of the characters too.
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
The silent challenge was really a blessing in disguise as it gave us a perfect way to show rather than tell.
greg c. Posted 6 months ago
I really loved that you went for some emotional beats rather than just showing us the obvious thriller aspects.
Luke S. Posted 6 months ago
Thanks Greg! We definitely wanted to capture a different side of the picture. The thriller's there, but we're aiming to balance that and a complex emotional story too.
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
Thanks Greg. I hope our little end shot also gave you the creeps and reminded you of our genre.
Robert J. Posted 6 months ago
Great showcase of your filmmaking skills. I like that you were ambitious enough to do multiple locations and give us a taste of character relationships.
Adam T. Posted 6 months ago
I think you did a nice job showing the emotional angle for the movie. Grown ups with any sense don't choose to watch porn around kids, even if they're asleep. Would you? It's my only complaint about this one. Otherwise nicely shot and good performances.
Luke S. Posted 6 months ago
Thanks Adam! The idea is Kate doesn't have any mother-sense. At all. It's hard to convey in 90 seconds. That's why her reaction to shut it off is a belated one. It's meant to be disturbing. thanks for watching!
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
Hmmm. Glad you enjoyed the sequence. It's an interesting question indeed as to how we should have worked in the porn. We were certainly debating it right up to the time we shot it, and now that it's out there we have a few more ideas.
Chad M. Posted 6 months ago
Music was good for the most part but it got annoying when it got louder. Maybe could have added a different sound to the build up. It was a "WTF" moment when the mom starts to rub her kids back while watching porn! Good match up on the last note to the fist.
Luke S. Posted 6 months ago
You must be in music or sound. ;) Thanks for your thoughts.
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
Appreciate the feedback. As a non-sound guy it's always challenging to set the levels and be sure about them.
Bari D. Posted 6 months ago
Good story. It's my hope that Canadian films are noticed more often within the film industry. Canada has a lot to offer. Good luck guys!
Luke S. Posted 6 months ago
Thanks Bari! The story's a bit different, and not everyone gets it right away. But we feel like we've got a compelling hook for a classic thriller here.
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
Glad we've hooked you with our story. I think the Cinecoup contest is really showing us all how much talent is really out there!
Melanie O. Posted 6 months ago
I like the little girl, she has great expression but not sure why the mom is watching porn while her kid is with her, gross and not real story here
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
We have had a couple of comments like that. We intended it to be a kinfolk random thing that Kate finds one of her past "films" on the hotel TV system, and she's kind of looking back at her old life/world which was part of her until just a few days earlier. You definitely need to be familiar with the description of Starkers for it to fit, which in the case of a viewer who has watched this far into the film would hopefully find to be a bit clearer.
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
But we definitely appreciate the feedback. Going forward it will help us with shooting and script.
Luke S. Posted 6 months ago
Also, Kate isn't meant to be an ideal mother. Far from it. A lot of her actions and reactions are "off", because she's never raised a child, and only met Charlotte for the first time that day.
Maddi M. Posted 6 months ago
Ok
Lindsay F. Posted 7 months ago
I never thought a hand could be so creepy... Also, does anyone else want to yell at the mom to close and bolt the door??
Paul T. Posted 7 months ago
I guess if we have audiences yelling at characters that means we've moved you, right?
Elayne T. Posted 7 months ago
I really loved this portrayal of a relationship that is just starting under terrible circumstances. Hate to imagine making this worse for them, but I guess that's what the ending is about.
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
Things get worse before they get better, but trust me you will want to see how this play out.
Tina K. Posted 7 months ago
Everything you guys put out just keeps getting better and better. Way to go guys!!!!! Keep it up!!!!
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
Glad to hear you're liking our progress, We are too.
Bryan C. Posted 7 months ago
Great clip!
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
Thank you Bryan.
Joe Y. Posted 7 months ago
I am not sure what to make of the creepy guy at the end. You had me up until that point, the two seemed to be working well together.
Paul T. Posted 7 months ago
It probably doesn't make sense from a script logistics perspective, but we wanted to end on a note that reminded everyone about the thriller side of Starkers
tess o. Posted 7 months ago
don't quite know what to make of this Kate character-- I find this extremely disturbing, and not at all in a good way
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
She left town years ago something of a broken individual, made some really bad decisions and now comes into her daughter's life with very little idea of how to relate to a young girl like Charlotte. I suggest checking out our Press Pitch video for more details about how we are approaching this.
Lyse W. Posted 7 months ago
Interesting suspense. I'm not in love with the idea of a woman watching porn as her daughter sleeps next to her but it's believable still. Good job!
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
That scene is definitely polarizing for our fans! I'm glad you found it believable. We thought it worked in the context of the scene and her character.
Emily H. Posted 7 months ago
good camera work and I especially liked the simple music for sound effects, I would like to see more story come through perhaps the man at the end a little earlier in the scene to show the story, good job!
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
Glad you enjoyed our camera work. It was great to have a DP on board for the shoot. It was tricky to work in our stalker story since at this point in the film it probably isn't quite so advanced. Things pace out a bit better in the script for sure.
Enzo V. Posted 7 months ago
The art of telling a story through action and visuals only should never be underestimated. Good job folks!
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
Thank you.We really embraced the challenge as an opportunity to show people that we are in this thing!
Shaun R. Posted 7 months ago
really nice job on this mission i really enjoyed the play off from the emotion was very powerful great job
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
Thank you very much Shaun.
Rocco V. Posted 7 months ago
Haa Pina beat me to it! Good work guys. I think this is the best one I've seen from you. Maybe you should make your movie silent? LOL!
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
Well you can definitely do a lot without words, but I think Luke has some pretty good dialogue for you too!
Luke S. Posted 6 months ago
It might be fun though. I do a mean silent film piano...
Pina V. Posted 7 months ago
Neat scene! The mom and the girl seem so real not getting along. Both of them come across great! And then eww that guy??
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
We were hoping to get an "ewwwww"
Bente H. Posted 7 months ago
You did well with this mission - you definitely moved the story along without speech. Well done.
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
Thank you for your feedback.
Anthony N. Posted 7 months ago
Very creeping, I kept looking over my shoulder thinking someone was coming. Very well done, the camera work was cool.
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
Look out Anthony - you never know who's listening on the other side of the wall
Nora J. Posted 7 months ago
I really enjoyed watching this video. It tells a story within the short span of time and does it without using words! Awesome.
Rebecca P. Posted 7 months ago
Your video shows your strengths as a team. Good job. Hope to see more from this team. All the very best.
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
Thanks Rebecca.
Paige H. Posted 7 months ago
The ending was super creepy! Also, the fact that she is watching a porno video of herself as her daughter sleeps. Very disturbing, but in a nice way.
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
I agree it's disturbing. Glad that it works for you :)
Luke S. Posted 6 months ago
Thanks Paige! Glad you found it good-disturbing. It's challenging ground for us to work as filmmakers, and definitely polarizing for some. We're trying to create a believably flawed pair, in the hopes that somehow they'll save each other. But that's a job for the whole movie! ;)
Victoria D. Posted 7 months ago
I like the fact that you have stuck to the missions and done the best within limitations. Good luck for the challanges ahead.
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
We are sticking to the missions and doing the best within limitations. Thanks for the well wishes.
jasmine C. Posted 7 months ago
Interesting relationship between the child and the mother. Would like to see more of this. Good luck with the remaining missions.
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
Thanks Jasmine.
Luke S. Posted 6 months ago
Thanks Jasmine! The script goes into this a lot. We really hope we can make this movie!
Maggie K. Posted 7 months ago
Perfect the way silence actually conveys so much first about what the kid and then the mom are going through.
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
This assignment was really an opportunity for us to build on the rift that is the starting point for our characters.
soumya c. Posted 7 months ago
I really enjoyed watching this video. It tells a story within the short span of time and does it without using words! Awesome.
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
Glad you enjoyed watching this video. We wanted to tell a story within the short span of time and without using words!

We wanted this video to show our strengths as a team. Thanks.

Petra P. Posted 7 months ago
Hm. This made me more interested.
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
Thanks - I hope you've had a chance to check out our Hype it and Trailer Redux. I think if you like this you'll see more to like in those.
Ryan M. Posted 7 months ago
This made me really curious to see more. I really liked the story. It was clear and the sound fit very well
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
Thanks Ryan.
Frank C. Posted 7 months ago
Well shot. Silence speaks volumes about their relationship. Great work guys. Looking forward to your next mission
Rachel M. Posted 7 months ago
Thought the relationship between the mother and daughter was well conveyed. The sound design helped bring out the emotion and sadness of the scene. Good job!
Roy K. Posted 7 months ago
Good job and excellent effort technically speaking. You guys really seem to try to work so much into these short clips. Like your teaser, this feels like you are pulling material from a larger work. Others I'm not sure can expand to feature size.
Donald Y. Posted 7 months ago
It was a good approach to the speechless trailer. it puts some stress on the actors to express emotions and they did it well. The music made me expectr something will happen, unexpected, but it ended without a punch line. I was waiting for a hand to reach up from under the bed or the younger one to be levitated.
Paul T. Posted 7 months ago
Thanks for the feedback. There was the creepy ending in the adjacent room. Did that work for you?
Ian F. Posted 7 months ago
This looked really professional. Love the locations and was definitely creeped out by the ending. Probably make me think about it whenever I go to a motel.
tarneet s. Posted 7 months ago
I really enjoyed watching this video. It tells a story within the short span of time and does it without using words! Awesome.

Aiden C. Posted 7 months ago
Nice work. I liked the variety of locations used to sell the mood. The music fit well and a great job on sound design.
Charlie S. Posted 7 months ago
Interesting relationship between the child and the mother. Would like to see more of this. Good luck with the remaining missions.
Angela C. Posted 7 months ago
Very nicely shot. Good job!
James M. Posted 7 months ago
very well done with a very creepy ending. Kinda weird she was watching her own porn while her kid was there haha
Luke S. Posted 7 months ago
Thanks James! what can we say? Kate's not all that cut out to be a mother...! :)
Brent M. Posted 7 months ago
Excellently shot; lots of fades to black. The first few were effective, then it started to feel a little overused. Without any words, the gestures become more important, and some of the major ones that tell the story (signalling the server, the back rub) seemed a little awkward. Excellent idea, though, to show the development of the relationship and then bring in the external presence of the stalker.
Sebastian C. Posted 7 months ago
I really enjoyed watching this video. It tells a story within the short span of time and does it without using words! Awesome.
Luke S. Posted 7 months ago
Thanks Sebastian! It was a tricky challenge. Glad you think we pulled it off!
Hudson M. Posted 7 months ago
Your video shows your strengths as a team. Good job. Hope to see more from this team. All the very best.
Luke S. Posted 7 months ago
Thanks Hudson! It feels like through the challenges we're raising our level a little bit more each time. cheers!
Jordan R. Posted 7 months ago
The ending was super creepy! Also, the fact that she is watching a porno video of herself as her daughter sleeps. Very disturbing, but in a nice way.
Luke S. Posted 7 months ago
Hahah thanks Jordan! I think very disturbing in a nice way is exactly what we're going for. Kate has no mom-filter operating, and that's gonna be a lot of fun to play with.
Cooper B. Posted 7 months ago
I like the fact that you have stuck to the missions and done the best within limitations. Good luck for the challanges ahead.
Luke S. Posted 7 months ago
The missions have been challenging for sure. Especially the constant onslaught and time constraints. But I feel like we're hitting a good groove with them. Thanks!
Ryder L. Posted 7 months ago
Interesting relationship between the child and the mother. Would like to see more of this. Good luck with the remaining missions.
Luke S. Posted 7 months ago
Thanks Ryder! We're really enjoying digging into the relationship with Kate and Charlotte as we finish fleshing out the screenplay. cheers!
Carmela V. Posted 7 months ago
Great work! The soundtrack was effective, and the actresses relay the tension between them. And the ending is perfectly creepy!
Luke S. Posted 7 months ago
The music brought out some great emotion eh? Thanks Carmela!
Andrea K. Posted 7 months ago
Wow, you have a lot going on in this clip. I really liked how you focused on a central relationship in these little slices. And then a slice of another relationship in the film to wrap it up.
Luke S. Posted 7 months ago
Thanks Andrea! It was hard to cover as much ground as we wanted to. Glad you think it works!
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
Thanks Andrea. Appreciate the feedback.
Michelle G. Posted 7 months ago
I didn't get what happened in the last 2 seconds. There was some decent cinematography - I did feel that how you chose to put everything together could have been better - I found the transitions a bit too abrupt.
Luke S. Posted 7 months ago
We had a lot of ground to cover in 90 seconds. Our "normal movie pacing" probably would be more leisurely. A little. :)
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
Thanks for the feedback - we did try to sandwich so much into it that maybe our pacing suffered a bit. The final film will have a bit more room to "breathe."
CR B. Posted 7 months ago
This one is a step up from your teaser, especially the camerawork. I also liked getting some actual character moments here. Nice job
Luke S. Posted 7 months ago
Thanks! We're really happy with how this one came out, too. It was still a brutal rush to make, but we were really able to dig into the characters in a way we couldn't before. And Brent Robinson joined us for cinematography this time around - he really helped us boost our level.
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
Thanks - we really wanted to impress on every level here.
Derek B. Posted 7 months ago
I like how this gets started right away chipping away at the emotions. Great music choices. You really conveyed Kate's exasperation and the girl's devastation.
Luke S. Posted 7 months ago
Thanks Derek! The Speechless exercise turned out to be a great opportunity for us to hone in on these characters and their relationship.
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
Thanks. Glad it worked for you.
Rogel D. Posted 7 months ago
Great camera work and acting. Storytelling is very detailed and well told. Would love to see the full film
Luke S. Posted 7 months ago
Thanks Rogel! We'd love to see it too. ;)
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
We've got our sights set on Top 15 and then Top 10 Rogel.
Heath H. Posted 7 months ago
Nikola Roumeliotis is so sweet. One smart cookie.
Luke S. Posted 7 months ago
She's great eh? You've been pretty awesome, too, Heath!
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
We're pleased with all our cast!
Patrick M. Posted 7 months ago
The film looks beautiful, and the images are very rich, but the foley was really flat and 2D, the pan to the big tubby dude was pretty intimidating though
Luke S. Posted 7 months ago
We didn't have a lot of time to work with the sound, and this was one we did ourselves. Gotta be selective about when we break out the big gun sound editor. Glad you like the cinematography.
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
Yeah - it's always a challenge to put things together so quickly. Check out our new teaser redux for a sample of better sound work.
Donald Y. Posted 7 months ago
The music really sets the tone of this mission. Without it, I think would just appear like a normal mother-daughter alienation.
Paul T. Posted 7 months ago
Just another day in the adventure of parenthood indeed!
Jamie M. Posted 7 months ago
The shots in this clip are really well executed. Very cinematic feel and the settings are really nice!
Luke S. Posted 7 months ago
Thanks Jamie! We came upon some pretty great locations. Wimpy's Diner at Kennedy in Scarborough was super-cooperative, and we worked in around that area. Turned out well!
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
We wanted to show our ability to get production value with this one. Cinematographer Brent Robinson really helped us get better shots.
Tony S. Posted 7 months ago
The way this one grows is really good! Nice tension between the mom and the girl, and then the creepy guy at the end? Yikes!
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
Thanks - glad we got a "yikes" form someone :)
George T. Posted 7 months ago
Makes you wonder what the next morning will bring. Charlotte is still brooding, but begins to soften up a bit on Kate. The creepy guy maybe bumps into them on the street accidentally on purpose?
Lene M. Posted 7 months ago
very good character acting
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
Wait and see..
Aden S. Posted 7 months ago
this mission really had heart. loved the interaction between the two leads. my heart went our to both of them
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
Thanks - we wanted to show that side of Starkers.
Sarah T. Posted 7 months ago
great acting! especially from the girl. always a struggle to find believable younger actors, so congrats!
Luke S. Posted 7 months ago
Thanks Sarah! We know we're really lucky in this regard. And the director Paul Thompson had a good eye for casting...
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
Definitely. Consider everything we've done with Starkers a hearty endorsement of our young actress's ability. She is remarkable.
Shane R. Posted 7 months ago
imagine? it's one thing being famous...and havent to deal with all the attention. but being a former porn star?
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
It's something we look forward to exploring further for sure.
Chris J. Posted 7 months ago
nice sequence guys. could really feel the disconnect between the two of them, and how much it hurt the mother.
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
I think they're feeling pain on both sides, which is at the heart of the disconnect.
Artjom G. Posted 7 months ago
so much content... love it!
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
Thanks - appreciate your support Artjom.
Melanie T. Posted 7 months ago
Love the concept and commitment. Great job showing transitions without any dialogue. It's amazing how much emotion comes through.
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
Thanks - our team goal was to show that we have an emotional story at the core.
dino r. Posted 7 months ago
This film intrigues me. I love the way the way conflict is portrayed between the Mother and daughter. They have a nice on screen chemistry. Heath along with the shooting created a real creepy element. This submission is gaining momentum as process moves forward. I can't wait to see whats next. congrats and I really like the young girls performance. Good Luck and Go Starkers
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
I think we have been getting better and more focused as the contest continues. Our cast across the board really brings so much to the impression this makes.
Jacob R. Posted 7 months ago
Good acting and nice shooting, just when I think I've seen all of the best ones I find another good one
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
Glad we made such a strong impression.
Sean C. Posted 7 months ago
Really good job guys. I enjoyed what you have done with this and look forward to seeing you in the top 40!
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
Thanks - we MADE IT!
Kaitlyn M. Posted 7 months ago
Ahh, creepy reveal at the end was a powerful choice! Although part of me almost wishes the title hadn't come up - it drew me out of the world a little too soon.
I thought that some of the gestures between the mother and daughter felt a little bit forced, but the ideas themselves were excellent ways to develop that relationship in this speechless scene.
I also feel it's worth mentioning that the lack of speech felt very natural here! It didn't seem like something was missing, so well done on that front.
Paul T. Posted 7 months ago
Thanks for the feedback. The ending was a bit tough to extend due to the 90 second time limit. I debated cutting down another part to get more seconds at the end too. I guess I'll take "leaves you wanting more" this time around though :)
Luke S. Posted 7 months ago
Thanks Kaitlyn! It's interesting in a minimalist exercise like this to realize how little you need to convey an emotion. It was a great opportunity for us to dig into the mother/daughter relationship.
Luke S. Posted 7 months ago
Also wanted to take the opportunity to reply to your review of the main trailer. One of the interesting aspects of the Cinecoup process, for us at least, is that we're still finding our movie. We were barely past developing the idea while the trailer was shooting. I'm hoping as we develop it further that we hit a lot more of those resonant notes, and create something both grittier and more genuine.
Andrea K. Posted 7 months ago
Nicely shot sequence and well acted. I like the way you surprise us at the end.
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
Thanks for the feedback. We wanted to remind everyone that there will be some creepy aspects to the movie too!
Ryan B. Posted 7 months ago
a diner is the only place to decompress after a visit with dead loved ones. psychologically speaking.
Luke S. Posted 7 months ago
Preferably without headphones! ;) And I'll decompress with a chopped steak platter any day.
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
By the way, the Diner was hosted by the lovely people at Wimpy's Kennedy&St. Clair in Toronto. They were so accommodating to us, I think they deserve another shout out.
John K. Posted 7 months ago
Nicely done. I enjoyed the tension between the two actors. They seem to have a great rapport with each other
Luke S. Posted 7 months ago
Thanks John! We're lucky to have Michelle and Nikola. They've got a very natural, believable vibe.
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
They really do work well together, and we love working with them.
Patti D. Posted 7 months ago
The silence conveyed a lot! Both in the relationship and the suspense factor. You squeezed a lot into 90 seconds! The guy at the end tied it up in a creepy bow.
Luke S. Posted 7 months ago
Any time there's a creepy bow involved, we must be doing something right! :) thanks Patti!
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
Like some kind of twisted Christmas present.
Brenna T. Posted 7 months ago
nicely done with this mission your team did a great job loved the overall concept and the feeling it evokes
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
Thank you. I'm glad it worked for you.
Ella H. Posted 7 months ago
I really enjoyed watching this video. It tells a story within the short span of time and does it without using words! Awesome.
Luke S. Posted 7 months ago
Thanks Ella! The time constraint was tough, to hit on a meaningful emotional sequence we could play out. Glad you like it!
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
Thanks.
Sophia S. Posted 7 months ago
Your video shows your strengths as a team. Good job. Hope to see more from this team. All the very best.
Luke S. Posted 7 months ago
Thanks Sophia! We feel like this was one of our best efforts to date. :)
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
Thanks - it was really a team effort.
Emma J. Posted 7 months ago
The ending was super creepy! Also, the fact that she is watching a porno video of herself as her daughter sleeps. Very disturbing, but in a nice way.
Luke S. Posted 7 months ago
Yeah... it is disturbing isn't it? Glad you caught that - it's a subtle thing, but Kate's judgement as a mother is a little off. Looking forward to exploring that more in the movie...
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
I think it works in the context of a former porn actress who isn't much of a mom yet. Glad you liked it
Marie L. Posted 7 months ago
I like the fact that you have stuck to the missions and done the best within limitations. Good luck for the challanges ahead.
Marie J. Posted 7 months ago
Interesting relationship between the child and the mother. Would like to see more of this. Good luck with the remaining missions.
Luke S. Posted 7 months ago
Thanks Marie! We're looking forward to exploring more of their relationship, and its difficulties. cheers!
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
Thanks - I hope you've enjoyed our last few missions since Speechless.
Amy K. Posted 7 months ago
That was really great! You did a good job of creating character dynamics and including the scary stuff your project is about all in a short space.
Paul T. Posted 7 months ago
Thanks. It was tough to fit so much in, and it will be nice when we make the feature to have more than 90 seconds to really build on both relationships and suspense.
Luke S. Posted 7 months ago
Imagine what we could do with three minutes!
Jeff C. Posted 7 months ago
really like the composition in general - some great shots! and the transition at the end was a great choice too - nice!
Paul T. Posted 7 months ago
We definitely wanted to show that our story was about the characters as much as it was about the scary stuff. But we definitely wanted to end on a more sinister note. Glad you liked it!
Luke S. Posted 7 months ago
I should add that the transition was pure improvisation on the spot. The original shot as written called for the stalker to be watching Kate and Nikola through the window. When we couldn't get a ground-floor room the night we were shooting, we had to nix that idea. Paul and Brent came up with the sliding transition, and it worked out great!
Jeff R. Posted 7 months ago
I really enjoyed the direction of the video. Every shot was confident and seemed planned out. I also love that you're wearing a beret in the production shot!
Paul T. Posted 7 months ago
Sorry to report that the beret was worn by our cinematographer Brent and not myself. Gotta get one!
Carolyn K. Posted 7 months ago
Intriguing! Can't wait to see why the dysfunction exists between Kate and Charlotte.
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
Hopefully our more recent Hype It video explains that for you.
Carolyn K. Posted 6 months ago
Loved the Hype It video & the new Redux. Well done!
Afzal H. Posted 7 months ago
Love the graveyard visuals, actually the cinematography throughout the sequence is great. The ending is creepy and I think that is what makes it powerful. Good job guys!
Paul T. Posted 7 months ago
Thanks. For this mission we were assisted by cinematographer Brent Robinson, who heard about our project and volunteered to help us up our visual game.
Afzal H. Posted 7 months ago
That's awesome!!! You can easily hire him when you have the million bucks :) It'll be amazing if Brent shoots this project.
Jennifer C. Posted 7 months ago
I find this movie a bit creepy and intense, but interesting. I'd like to see where it all goes and how it all connects.
Luke S. Posted 7 months ago
Thanks Jennifer! It's a juggling act for sure, balancing the mother reunited with her daughter and the pornstar/stalker plots. There's a lot of good territory to mine...
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
Glad to hear you like it. Stick with us - it will be worth your while.
patricia s. Posted 7 months ago
cool guys
charles w. Posted 7 months ago
Looks interesting and full of tension. Creeped me out. I liked the transition wipe to the last sequence
Luke S. Posted 7 months ago
Thanks Charles! The wipe was improvised - we originally planned a stacked shot with the stalker in the window - but couldn't do it when we didn't get a ground-floor room. What Paul and Brent came up with turned out really well!
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
Thanks - we had to kindof wing it with the wipe - plus we used the same room, but flopped one of the shots.
Rick J. Posted 7 months ago
Looks great! Feels great!! I'll like to say, that I'm so fortunate to be involved with such a talented cast and crew! Thank You for being so supportive!! Go Starkers!
George S. Posted 7 months ago
Great flick!! Love Starkers!!
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
Thanks George. We love our fans!
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
We're grateful to have you with us Rick!
Sue T. Posted 7 months ago
Excellent editing and music with this clip! I love how you really see the struggle between these two characters as they find their relationship. Can't wait to see more!
Luke S. Posted 7 months ago
Thanks Sue! This mission really helped us zero in on that side of the story. It was a cool challenge.
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
We used a combination of tracks from our composer Marc Koecher and a track from JinglePunks. They really helped pull it together.
Nikola R. Posted 7 months ago
The filming is great! The sound is great! The lighting is great! And the video is amazing! Really want too see it!
Luke S. Posted 7 months ago
Thanks Nikola! The acting's pretty great too...! ;p We're really happy with how this one turned out.
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
Hey, you forgot to mention our amazing cast who really made it work.
Kari W. Posted 7 months ago
Getting even better as you go team! This is the best mood setter yet. Love the ending... Excited to see more. Keep the coffee flowin' ;)
Luke S. Posted 7 months ago
Thanks Kari! Really feel like this one came together well. It would be nice to snag a full eight hours some day, tho... ;)
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
Thanks - we wanted to really show off our film idea with this one, and we had fun making it!
Gemma T. Posted 7 months ago
This is really good love the tension that's been built by the actors the ending is brilliant keeps you wanting more :)
Thomas A. Posted 7 months ago
Great sequence between the actors, you can really feel the relationship here. Creepy ending, very intrigued!
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
Thanks - we owe a lot to our actors who did so much without saying a word.
Dan S. Posted 7 months ago
very cool guys!! - team PA
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
Thanks - we always enjoy PA's stuff too.
Deadline M. Posted 7 months ago
Great job with this one...had to watch it twice to realize it was herself she was watching on the TV! The ending was super creepy. Ah! Looking forward to seeing more from you guys!
Paul T. Posted 7 months ago
Thanks, we hope these little slices whet peoples' appetites for Starkers. We always try to cram so much into them.
Deadline M. Posted 7 months ago
So far so good!
Oskar W. Posted 7 months ago
Nice work.
Paul T. Posted 7 months ago
Thanks Oskar! Appreciate the support as always!
Kellie M. Posted 7 months ago
The end gave me chills. Up to that point it seemed like a pretty normal mother/teenage daughter love/hate relationship. Lol! Great job team! :)
Paul T. Posted 7 months ago
That IS the challenge with a thriller, I think. You have to give people something they recognize from reality first before you twist it and take things darker.
Allan W. Posted 7 months ago
Very nicely done fellas! #i90Army
Paul T. Posted 7 months ago
Thanks. I really loved the clip from Interstate 90 too!
Nikola R. Posted 7 months ago
That turned out awesome great job!
Paul T. Posted 7 months ago
Thanks - the actors make it so easy for me!
Natalia N. Posted 7 months ago
The sound seemed a bit off to me but nonetheless great work by both actresses. The little girl especially.
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
I can't praise Nikola and Michelle enough. Also just being such good sports through a long indie day of shooting made things very easy for us.
Sharon H. Posted 7 months ago
Well done. You do feel the young girls dislike and you get to feel the mother's frustration. She wants so much to give comfort & can't. You don't need dialogue to convey that message. Can't wait to see the entire film.
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
Thank you - it was a bit less obvious to go for the emotional punch with our film concept, but that IS what we are going for here.
Cathy S. Posted 7 months ago
Loss is incredibly hard and this young actress did a great job portraying the feeling of isolation even when you are with someone.
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
We LOVE working with our cast Michelle Van Deyl (Kate) and Nikola Roumeliotis (Charlotte). Nikola really did an amazing job here.
STeve R. Posted 7 months ago
I absolutely love the last moments of this clip - from watching herself on a porn clip at a motel through the hesitation and then follow through of a comforting hand that is accepted by Charlotte to panning to the stocker. There is so much visually in that without a word spoken. Music is rivetting. If I had my druthers - I like to have seen that sequence exaggerated in the time line from start to finish. The entire clip covers alot of physical territory and time lapse and feels a bit rushed to me - but man you hit it in the last sequence.
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
Thanks for the feedback - we wanted to give that scene a bit of build up and context. In the finished film we'll have time to linger a bit more.
Monty J. Posted 7 months ago
Great job guys! It looks awesome, and I really love the plot, and music! Can't wait to vote! Well done!! Go Starkers!!
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
Thanks - we appreciate the support and your votes!
Luke S. Posted 7 months ago
Great work Paul! I know how hard this was to cut down to size. Slow build with a grip!
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
It was a team effort throughout. Thanks for your help pulling it together.
Jason M. Posted 7 months ago
Nicely done. You really let the viewer feel the tension between mother and daughter.
Paul T. Posted 6 months ago
Thanks Jason.
Melanie . Posted 7 months ago
Nice work. Love how you really showed the tension between Kate and Charlotte in more detail. Go starkers!
